the world is collapsing around our ears

Does anyone know of any great radio stations on the web, that I can listen to at work with a Windows Media Player? The thing about radio is that it's either over-commercialized and has the same 15 songs playing over and over, or a public/community/college station that plays so much stuff that I've never even heard of. Last week a coworker tipped me to a Seattle college station called KEXP, during the day I seem to know or recognize about 30-40% of the songs, I've heard them play pavement, white stripes, sonic youth, the streets, fiery furnaces, spoon, belle and sebastian, GBV, blackalicious, interpol, and others. But if anybody knows of another station that's even better, please comment and let me know.

hey playah

I go to www.SomaFM.com, they offer several kinds of music stations, but the one i listen to is called "indie pop rocks!", which is quite possibly the lamest name ever, but its good. they offer a real-time song history list and play a decent amount of stuff that even I've heard of, so....

for example, i'm listening now, and the past 20 songs played have included
-franz ferdinand
-apples in stereo
-toroise
-doves
-fountains of wayne
-deathcab for cutie

so, try it out.

I can't use anything but WMP because I'm at work, and can't simply download winamp. And a lot of other web-based players have annoying popups that keep jumping up. it has to be straight up, Windows Media Player, bi-otch.

I'll try it tomorrow and see if it works. The station looks pretty cool, I recognized 100% of the artists in the history when I looked at it, but haven't heard most of the songs. thanks, brah

I erased that previous link by accident.

Here it is.

Yo Mr. Lucht. I've always listened to Radiostorm.com's Alternative station (which uses Winamp), but, as it turns out, they just got bought out by MantaRadio (you can read all about that at http://www.radiostorm.com/). Anyway, conveniently enough, MantaRadio still has the alternative stream but it now plays in WMP. You can check it out here: http://mantaradio.com/.

Ahhh, yes...perhaps I should have given you a little play by play so you know what's out there. It doesn't seem like the music selection has changed much since Manta took it over, but here's what's been playing this morning:

Sum 41 - Motivation
Nirvana - You Know You've Right
Deftones - Shove It
Gary Jules - Mad World
White Striped - Hardest Button to Button
The Vines - Ride
Thrice - Stare at the Sun
Overseer - Horn Dog
Puddle of Mudd - Away From Me
NERD - She Wants to Move

There you have it. In the past, they've played way too much obnoxious Metallica music. Who know? Maybe that'll be going away now.

Hmmm... Thanks, dudes, for all your trouble. nate, thanks for posting the link to that application again, I had tried to email it to my work account, but the network ate it. Likewise, When I tried to play the station, which actually looks awesome, I had an error message because I don't have something or other, framework1.1 or something. Blasted office network wins again. First it took away my email, then my naterohan.com, and now a cool radio station. At least I still have my dignity. Mostly. kexp.org has been the best fit for me so far, but I'll have to cleap looking.
